Richard was born in Keene, New Hampshire and graduated from High School in 1959 in West Palm Beach, Florida and immediately joined the US Navy. He was a Machinist Mate on the USS Samuel N. Moore (DD 747) in Long Beach, California. He met Audrey N. Turner and in 1962 they were married.
In 1966, after two tours in Vietnam, Richard left the Navy to go to college. He graduated from California Baptist College in 1970 and was accepted at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, graduating in 1973. While in Seminary, he answered God's call to pastor Calvary Baptist Church in Oakland, California.
After five years, he went to the American Indian Baptist Church and from there the US Army called him on active duty as a Chaplain. While at Fort Riley, Kansas, he and Audrey joined the Officer Christian Fellowship and met Dr. Madison and Jan Patrick.
Richard retired from the US Army in July, 1989 and moved to Silverton, Oregon. In February, 1996, God called Richard on a 21 day fast and during the fast, Richard heard God tell him to call Dr. Patrick. Dr. Patrick indicated they needed another board member and asked Richard to consider. During the fast God gave Richard the answer of "yes" from 2 Samuel 2:1.
"1After this David inquired of the LORD, 'Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?' And the LORD said to him, 'Go up.' David said, 'To which shall I go up?' And he said, 'To Hebron."
Dr. Patrick then asked Richard to consider going on a mission trip to Southeast Asia to experience first hand the mission fields of Southeast Asian Missions. In September, 1996 Richard went on his first of six mission trips to Singapore, Nepal, India and Korea and he will be going to India and the Philippines in October 2011 for his seventh mission.
